Is it ok to fire a military spouse from a job just b/c she has to leave in 5 months???

I received a job offer from a hotel as a receptionist, I went in for an interview and told them up front I am a military spouse and my husband is deployed for anouther 5 months and they knew i was from a diffrent state. The second week I came into work and my employer pulls me to the side and tells me she has to let me go. Her boss had told her to do so b/c he was looking for a permanent employer. I never said I was going to be leaving he just assumed it. There was nothen I could say to anyone I denied leaving but I had lost the job. I even mentioned to him that there was no way of being sure anyone would be permanent. Is there anything I can do about this? Can I get unemployment or sue them??

Unemployment you can get.. but what they did is totally legal. These days they could tell you they were firing you because they found your shoe laces offensive.. at least they were honest.
Reply:you might be able to get unemployment. if i was you i would call a lawyer asap. don't let something like this happen to the next person. if you don't do something people like him will think they can treat people any way they want.
Reply:Legal? Yes. Ethical? No. Report it the labor board? Yes. Unemployment?? In MOST state you would have to be employed for 6 months or more to apply. Let the local military family liason's office know of this, problem. And write a letter to the Company President. Let him/her know you understand that it was legal, but it stikes of a lack of flexiblity to military families, which in the eyes of many Americans ( Myself included) as unpatriotic and unrealistic. Who has held a job as a hotel receptionist for more than a few months to a couple of years?????
Reply:Your husband is currently deployed, he is due to return in 5 months - and your "permanent" home is in another State. Gee, how is anyone to guess that you might not leave the area when your husband comes home?

Seriously, when an employer says they are looking for someone to fill a PERMANENT position, that is what they want to get: someone to fill a PERMANENT position. In 5 months, you might move back to your permanent home in that other state. If there is any real chance of you leaving after only 5 months - and you have admitted that there is - then you are not really a permanent employee.

You might be able to swing unemployment - but the employer is within his rights to give you your "walking papers".
Reply:File a complaint with your state's Dept. of Labor. If they ignore you I would write a letter to every TV station, radio station and newspaper in your town and write a letter to the editor of each newspaper and use the hotel's name as often as possible.
