Suddenly, I can't get 80% of jobs in my field, b/c I don't speak SPANISH! This is America! What's going on?!

For years I worked at major companies as a customer service rep. It was decent money to me considering I only have a few yrs of college, not a full degree yet. I was good at it and was always offered jobs and a valued employee. 2 years ago I worked for General Electric. They closed my entire worksite b/c of contract conflicts w/the company who's accnt we serviced. I took a break to take some more classes. When I returned to my field 1.2 yrs later (2005), I was astonished to find that I was no longer able to get a job w/the best paying companies or even average ones. Why? Because I don't speak SPANISH! Ad after ad in the paper, on the job websites, etc: "Bilingual in English and Spanish only need apply" and "Bilingual a MUST!". Is this still the USA?! I realize that times change. Businesses are more global now. One has to stay abreast to remain competitive but GOOD GRIEF! Do the French have to also speak Russian to get a measly 28 Grand a year?! What is happening here? Anyone know why?

Suddenly, I can't get 80% of jobs in my field, b/c I don't speak SPANISH! This is America! What's going on?!
Its called hypocrisy! Spanish speakers dont have to learn english, but english speakers must know spanish or another language in order to get a job.
Reply:call your Representative and complain this is another reason to stop immigration
Reply:OMG I totally hear you!! I've had my sights set on this one job that I am highly qualified for, for sooooooo long, but rarely has there been an opening. Just when I figured I'd have to do someone in that position in, in order to get a job there, (just kidding!), FINALLY there's an opening! I rush my resume there at once... Only to find that although I was best qualified for the position, NOW I need to be bi-lingual in Spanish as well. ?????????? Forget the years spent in college and in the field as well, these do not matter anymore just cuz I cannot speak Spanish? hmmmmmmmphffffff!!!!

%26lt;grumbles as I work thru 'Spanish for Dummies'%26gt;

It's totally a pisser! I know exactly how that feels.... :(
Reply:Actually, the language that everyone should be learning is JAPANESE!

In about 20 years, most American corporations will be owned by Japanese mega-corporations. The Japanese yen is currently much stronger than the American dollar, and it's only a matter of time before American corporations are bought-out by their Japanese counterparts.

So, anyone who wants to conduct business in the near future will have to know Japanese, not Spanish. And even the Spanish-speakers will all need to learn Japanese. Get used to it, because it's coming, whether we like it or not.

To Mexican Mafia - I don't see many Mexicans owning any corporations, so you don't have to worry about the Japanese takeover. And if there ARE any Mexican-owned corporations out there, a Japanese corporation will buy them out pretty soon anyway. Then the Mexicans will have to learn Japanese too. Don't be so arrogant to think you're above this, because soon most international business will be owned by a Japanese corporation. They are already buying up European corporations, it's only a matter of time before they start buying up American corporations as well.

To Angela R - the "vast majority" do NOT speak Spanish. According to the 2000 census, there are 100 million Mexican citizens. There are about 20 million in Central America, which is considered part of North America, and most of those speak Spanish. So you have 120 million Spanish speakers on our continent. The US has 281 million people (2000 census). Maybe 20% speak Spanish (personally, I speak French). Our neighbors to the north don't speak Spanish at all, they speak English and French. Please don't use a term like "vast majority" when it's not even 40%.
Reply:My dear Gracie, America is not only Yankee land, it is a huge continent discovered by Christopher Columbus long time ago.

And according to the democratic principle, the majority rules the minorities, in this continent the majority of countries, speak Spanish, if the the job you applying for demands Spanish speakers you must speak Spanish, it is so simple.
Reply:Only in America would being bilingual be considered an inconvenience. This is a global world and employers want the biggest bang for their buck. Not only for the sake of your job, think of the places you can visit and fit right in, let alone the improved self esteem and feeling of accomplishment. It was mandatory in school that we be bilingual and I thank God for that, it has given me choice jobs and also many travel opportunities. Picking up a third language was my own choice and has only enriched my life. You must change with the times...with NAFTA two of your biggest trading partners, Canada and Mexico can get clients who speak either French or Spanish.
Reply:There is nothing wrong with learning spanglish!

Is that german gokart?
Reply:Amiga, learn Spanish, in all the jobs, in all the countries, if you speak more than only one language you win more money.
Reply:miwt, you have just made a good point.More than half of the posters on this site keep saying the illegals are living on welfare. that means they should have plenty of time to learn english. Unless, maybe, you all think they might be working 60 hours a week and do not have time to learn english.Naw, that could't be the reason.
Reply:In mexico is the most important jobs you need to know english.

--------EARN SPANISH
Reply:what's going on is that the corporate world always follows where the quickest, easiest money is. (and I can tell you many times I was so disappointed by the hispanic sounding customer service reps who were trained like parrots on the phone and I could hardly communicate with them)

the upper echelons of the the corporate world are not going to care(and they never will) about if people like you, who for years maintained the customer base for them and are the front of their businesses , are going to be losing your jobs or losing your homes,etc... because you don't speak Spanish.. As long as they could fulfill their profit projection and get their golden parachute in and out , The big wigs and the rest in the corporate world would not freking blink an eye for letting cheap and illegal labor turn this country into a wasteland of lawlessness and injustice.

if I were you I would try:

1. tackling the language(eventhough I don't speak Spanish, I know it's not that hard of a language to learn)and also really think deep and hard about what you really want to do in the future in terms of your career. this maybe a great chance for you to get out of what your have been doing and to get into something that's really best for you. remember, everything happens for a reason, you won't be able to catch something that's much better for you if you don't let go of the old thing that your are holding on to.

and if you have the mind and time,

2: look into finding the right representatives in the senate or the congress or whatever to bring this issue to the attention of the entire nation. most people don't think what the illegals do in this country will affect them that much, but this is just one of the loud and clear and unfortunate examples of how the country and our culture can be destroyed bit by bit if the policy makers and the leaders of the country don't do their jobs(to look out for the American people!!!!!)

Bastard's right, one of the many reasons that these illegals came here is that the U.S. has two hundred times better labor protection system(even as it's going downhill) than any of the illegals' God forsaken homie land can even dream of.

OK, LET'S TALK ABOUT AMERICANS BEING OPEN TO THE REST OF THE WORLD AND LEARN TO BE BILINGUAL:

IT'S ALL GOOD AND FAIR, BUT WHAT ABOUT THESE ILLEGAL HISPANICS? HOW COME THEY CAN'T BE OPEN TO THE REST OF THE WORLD AND LEARN TO SPEAK AT LEAST AN EASY LANGUAGE LIKE ENGLISH???HOW COME THEY HAVE TO HAVE EVERYTHING TRANSLATED INTO SPANISH FOR THEM AND WOULD THREATEN TO TURN THE COUNTRY UPSIDE DOWN IF THEY DON'T GET THEIR WAYS???

over the past few months, I have been rather astonished by the sheer ignorance and arrogance of people like" Mexican Mafia..." or any of those who keep chanting about "Hispanics taking over the U.S. blah blah blah.......

I am happy to live as long as I can and wait for the day when all the hispanic/latin countries to get their acts together, get rid of the rampant corruption that's ingrained in their culture, to learn to obey laws and regulations, to start taking education more seriously than having fun, to raise ALL of their daughters (instead of just the previliged few)to be scientists, doctors, teachers, politicians, rather than just beauty queens, cleanning women, teen age mothers........

Just because there are too many illegal hispanics in this country doesn't mean they are guarranteed a bright and better future. especially if they keep wanting to have things adjusted to exactly the same as where they fled from. We already see what the lovely gangs and cartels are doing damages to the hispanic communities.
Reply:hire a lawyer that is discrimination they are trying to get low wage illegals to do your job

you may be able to recieve money for compensation and damages as well as attourney fee's
Reply:Yahoo questions is slowly letting me realize, the human race is disgusting. I've never come across so much hate in my life. And for the question...give me one hispanic that said to your face "you need to learn spanish". Give me one! I don't think you can. It's our AMERICAN companies that want us to learn Spanish. Don't yell at the hispanics...yell at capitalism.
Reply:When Americans both African American and Caucasian started noticing the same thing in Nevada as far back as 1995, nothing was done about it. Those that speak Spanish got all of the better paying jobs and Americans more qualified were passed over. And it is still happening!

Nobody said a word when jobs in Detroit started moving south of the border either. Jobs moved out of Chicago to include Zenith, RCA and Motorola. Now with House Bill 1-B that is currently on the floor of Congress and both Democrats and Republicans that are run by Corporate America are all for sending more High Tech jobs overseas and importing more Illegal aliens to take the rest of the High Tech jobs in America.

All I can say is this, Americans are going to be expected to assimilate into their culture, not the other way around. The rich in the Democratic and Republican Parties DON'T CARE!
Reply:Sue for discrimination, it seems to work for everyone else, maybe then they would start thinking of the American worker if the American worker stood up for themselves like others do
Reply:Most of the world speaks a second languge. Get over it and be glad that our counrty has finally caught up with the rest of the world
Reply:I understand how you feel. To those who say we should speak both languages to me these train of thoughts forget other non Americans who are not having services offered to them in their language

To all who desire a better way all the other people here from may other different countries who face that same problem illegals do face from lack of English yet they apply themselves to learning engish. That seems unfair to the rest of people who came here leaglly
Reply:Why is it the Spanish speaking population is the ONLY one in the US blatantly demanding WE learn Spanish?

Ever hear of any other immersion schools BESIDES Spanish?

The fact there are so many here in the US is indeed a copout answer!
Reply:You better learn fast, huh?
Reply:I'm sorry - I don't think that it is right that you "have" to speak Spanish in the USA in order to get a job. How is it that the employers I hear about who seem to want "bilingual" Spanish/English speakers then tend to hire illegal immigrants when I understand most of them do not speak English? It is because the employers don't really care that you can't speak Spanish so much as they want to be able to hire an illegal immigrant for far below what they will have to pay you and this is their way for getting out of having to hire you at the legal wage.

I live in Canada and while this is a "bilingual" country with two official languages - English and French, I have never been prevented from getting a job because I don't speak French; nor, have I heard of anyone else who has been declined employment for that reason. This may be the case in Quebec (I live in British Columbia), but honestly, here in Canada where we are officially a bilingual country, we do not have the problem that you in the USA are having due to the Spanish language requirement for so many jobs. Go figure!
Reply:lear spanish is your better option, I speak 3 english, spanish and french and i never have problems finding a job, and i win a bit mora that persons that speak only one,
Reply:It is all about money. Businesses don't care who you are as long as you give them your money. Why do you think AMERICA imports products made outside of the US. Thats right, it is cheap labor. I suggest you as an AMERICAN quit complaining and start learning. Why would anyone waste a few more dollars on you when they can hire someone else willing to work for less. Think about it. Would you want to pay more or less for basically the same thing.

Oh yeah- quit being so racism- it is AMERICA after all. What about all those US soldiers from immigrants fighting for people like you. Now that my friend is the question you should be asking. Why are they fighting for racists in the US? Thats right they are not. They are fighting for AMERICA not the people who hate them for what they are.
Reply:Uh, 'bienvenidos a los Etados Unidos'....
Reply:We happen to be a country that grants asylum to many immigrants. There is a great demand for people that can accomodate the language barrier. I know this is a sticky situation to deal with, because this is America. But think about all the disasters people had to deal with to live freely. I pray you find another job, and I hope even though this is frustrating, that you have compassion for these people.
Reply:welcome to the next liberal elected congress...political correctness is only part of what people voted for...remember those bumper stickers...well ...DONT BLAME ME I VOTED CONSERVATIVE.
Reply:I have been through it too-it is so frustrating! All of the immigrants have come from Spanish speaking countries and all the companies want everyone to conform. It is a sad fact . Our opportunites have almost all been taken away, and everyone needs to fight for change-I want to be able to give my kids a good life and all of the immigration is making it so hard. I am not learning Spanish so I just opened my own company.
Reply:I am realy surprised. U better learn spanish if it is as you say.

Kacceka
Reply:Welcome to America......Where the vast majority on this continent speak Spanish.....What do you expect, it was going to catch up to us, sooner or later! I am surprised it took so long....
Reply:Ummm Mexican immigration?

It's a bit ridiculous I agree, but what can you do?
Reply:Assimilate or leave!
Reply:The whole 'Welcome to America, now speak English" attitude really pisses me off. You need to learn to ACCEPT the fact that there are people in the US that don't speak English. English is not the official language of this country, so I suggest that if you want to get a job in that career field - you better start learning spanish.
